The need to convert meters to feet may arise countless times and in most varying situations. Unfamiliar units wait for you in a foreign shop for anything from clothes to furniture. You could stumble upon different metrics when reading a book or binging a movie or TV series. And if you moved to another country, new metrics must be understood because of the law regulations, at least.

There are three main methods to convert meters to feet. For example, you can find a conversion chart—a table with precalculated conversions. Tables are great when you need to convert pretty typical and popular values, but they still drive you to calculations if you have a specific number, and their data is not very precise.

Online converters are excellent: fast, precise, and simple to use, but they require an internet connection and can demand payment.

If you remember the simple mathematics behind the correlation of a meter to feet, you can convert them anywhere, anytime.

The difference between two units

The reason why we sometimes need to convert meters to feet is that both are used to measure and describe length and distance but have different histories and expansions.

The meter (or, in European spelling, meter) is a basic length measurement unit of the SI system (the International System of Units). First defined in 1793 in relation to Earth’s circumference and the distance between the equator and the North Pole, the meter was redefined several times. The latest definition, dated 2019, states that the meter is the distance traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/299792458 of a second, with the definition of a metric second.

The International System of Units is used in most countries of the world. In other SI units, a meter (m) is 1000 mm, 100 cm, or 0.001 km.

The foot is used to measure the length in British Imperial and US customary metric systems. If you think that the human foot may be related to the name, you are totally right: our ancestors used body parts for measurements as they had no other units available. The foot was different for Chinese, Greek, French, English, or Roman people, and it could even be different in different cities. Nowadays, it is used in the UK, US, and Canada, but also in ISO standards and aviation. One foot (ft) equals one-third of the yard or 12 inches.

How to do a conversion

Length conversion is a quick one-operation calculation when you know the units’ ratio:

1 meter to feet equals 3.2808.

1 foot to meters equals 0.3048.

Going from these, you can either multiply your number of meters by 3.2808 or divide it by 0.3048.

To convert 2 meters in feet, we can multiply 3.2808 by our number (2) and get 6.5616. If we want to convert 2 meters to feet in reverse, we divide 2 by 0.3048, and we still end with the same result.

The conclusion

Meters and feet are used in different parts of our world, and to properly understand the length or distance in question, we need to do conversions from time to time. The calculation itself is fairly simple once you remember the correlation of m to ft.

And if you do not wish to waste time and think too much about mathematics, you can save your effort and ask for an online converter: https://foxconverter.com/unit-converters/length-converter/meters-to-feet . It will give you instant and accurate results for free, with no extra actions required.
