Later Epic filed a suit against Apple for the commission from the App store. Recently, Google also stated, the developers will need to pay 30% taxes to Google for their in-app purchases. Now some popular Indian startups are forming an alliance to make the Indian App store as an alternative to the play store and App store.
It is even different for the Apple app store, You need to use only the Apple Payments for the in-app purchases. The fight between Epic and Apple is already getting intense and in India after the announcement of a 30% cut by Google the moves are getting stronger. Also, recently Paytm was removed from play store due to fantasy leagues and gambling reasons.
Indian startups calling this issue as a “App Neautrality”. In India, we have Net Neautrality so why don’t we adopt the App Neautrality, One Person Said. Almost 98% of the smartphones apps are under the Google Play Store in India. This large number is not even present in USA. US market is dominated by Google and Apple. But in India there’s only Google Play Store which is the dominating app store.
Startups Asking Government’s Interest in Indian App Store
Indian startups like Paytm, Policybazar, and other entrepreneurs held a meeting to address this issue. Paytm founder Vijay Sharma and Yashish Dahiya of Policybazar plans to move to the finance ministry for these increased charges in the Play store. Sources added, almost 80% of the digital apps are controlled by Google it will be not beneficial as Google single-handedly controls the whole ecosystem.
Janakiraman founder of Matrimony says, “A body monitored by the government can ensure app neutrality, fairness and openness”. Most of the startups are asking the government to step in and accelerate the Indian App Store idea.
Startups stated, even in the coming times any geopolitical tensions come up, the Indian App Store will be there to fulfill the needs. This argument came up after Google announced the 30% cut on in-app purchases. Though Google said, they will get a 30% cut for the digital goods not for the physical goods and deliveries.
NPCI which is the multistake holder from central bank and other top banks from India ended the duopoly of foreign card companies. Most of the users now use Rupay card which almost ended the duopoly by Visa and Mastercard. The startups aims for the same results from the Indian App Store.
Government Open For Suggestions
There is a huge dominance of Google and Apple in the digital services market in India. India already has the Government centric app store where only Government apps are available. We can use this one to scale up the app store, said one of the ministry members to ET. Electronics and Information technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted about the issue.
The Indian App store is already hosting the Government apps managed by CDAC. Though building an app store is not an easy task. Google and Apple spend billions of money to find out the trojans and malwares and security flaws from their store. Still, Google didn’t achieved complete security for the play store lots of spam apps still runs on store.
Building the store would be easy as the store is already there. But maintaining and protecting the users from the malicious apps will be a big task. Also, Google has strict policies against the apps which includes gambling and betting and that was the reason for Paytm Removal from store. If the Indian App store comes up and the big players like Paytm will stop the fantasy leagues in its app is also a big question.
Some opinions also might come up, that the data will be monitored and controlled by the government. Some experts may get disagree on that issue. The startup companies like Swiggy and Zomato were also warned by Google for IPL betting. If the Indian App store works out like the RuPay it will be a great deal for the developers. As per the sources, the Indian App store will charge only 2-5% commission.
